Sinopsis

Several years ago I began noticing deep insights that moved me to the core then faded like a dream. I'd recognize that the peace I'm searching for is hiding right under my nose; or that life is so intertwined that a separate self was a mirage; or that trying to control the mind-heart was as futile as it was unnecessary; or that meditative hindrances are diamonds in the rough to be learned from.

In a few minutes, the insights were gone. I could only remember that they seemed important. I began calling them "slippery fish." I also noticed that other people had these too. Perhaps they are what motivate us to enter a spiritual path.

I began collecting slippery fish by writing them down in a pithy phrase or two then surrounding them in stories and images to help keep them around a little longer so I could use them. Friends offered me photos to illuminate them. As my collection grew I grouped them under categories like "getting out of the way," "glowing like a candle," "finding a compass," "cleaning up our act," and "expanding infinitely."

The Meditator's Field Guide is a collection of reflections on liberating insights that are easily forgotten. It’s a field guide for meditators on the path. It embeds ageless teachings in stories and images to bring them to life so they will stick with us and continue to guide us.
