Sinopsis

This book has been developed by the principal author and editor together with the teaching team from the Departments of Physics and Mathematics at the University of Leicester, UK. The text arose from dissatisfaction with the results from a traditional lecture presentation of the theory with follow-up exercises, replacing this with the forerunner of this text to be studied by students in advance of workshops and small group tutorials, which could focus on supporting individual understanding. This approach was then known as resource-based learning. The text makes extensive use of worked examples to explain methods. These are presented to illustrate one main point at a time, each being followed by diagnostic exercises to test student understanding. It therefore can be used to provide appropriate amounts of new material for each teaching session. The text covers the standard mathematics required for a first degree in physics and related subjects as well as pointers to more advanced topics.
