Dr. Joe Serio is leadership trainer and conference keynote speaker who helps people overcome barriers and improve performance. He is the founder of Joe Serio Enterprises (www.JoeSerio.com), Government Leadership Training (GLTtraining.com), and Law Enforcement Development Training (www.LEDtraining.com), through which he provides leadership keynotes, trainings, and retreats to different organizations. He is also the co-founder of The Healthy Dispatcher (www.thehealthydispatcher.com), which provides wellness training to 9-1-1 dispatchers. Dr. Joe holds a Ph.D. in Criminal Justice with a specialization in Leadership and Organizational Behavior from Sam Houston State University. As part of a unique internship program during graduate school at the University of Illinois at Chicago, Dr. Joe was the only American to work in the Organized Crime Control Department of the Soviet national police. During his stay in 1990-91, he conducted groundbreaking research on Soviet organized crime. During this same period (1988-1993), Dr. Joe was the founding director of a summer study program at one of the five law schools in the People’s Republic of China. From 1995-96, he worked as a Moscow-based consultant to the global corporate investigation and business intelligence firm, Kroll Associates. In 1997, he was named director of Kroll’s Moscow office, where he managed a wide variety of investigations across the former Soviet Union and coordinated with Kroll offices around the world. Dr. Joe is the author of the critically-acclaimed book, Investigating the Russian Mafia. He has delivered presentations to global audiences on Russian organized crime and security issues. In the 1990s, he worked in Moscow as a media consultant to The New York Times, The Washington Post, CNN, BBC, and other media outlets. He helped produce three documentaries on Russian crime, including for the television program Investigative Reports on A&E. Dr. Joe also served for six years as editor-in-chief of the highly-regarded bimonthly magazine, Crime and Justice International, which distributed to more than 25 countries. From 2013 to the present, Dr. Joe has been delivering conference keynote presentations to businesses, associations, and criminal justice agencies. As a recorded musician, Dr. Serio occasionally brings music to his presentations, using harmonica and guitar to illustrate points pertaining to leadership, time management, organizational skills, and effective communication.
