"A futuristic genre-crossing story that fuses a murder mystery, high tech, and the search for joy."

It’s the near-future; cars may drive themselves, but they don’t fly. And military veteran Bill has no interest in anything past his PTSD until estranged cousin Marvin shows up. Now Bill’s investigating the suicide of Marvin’s lover, the mayor. His investigation leads him to NuTree protester, Julie Slade; married, has a thing for 1980s fashion and, apparently, snarky ex-SpecOps officers. Federal Agent Clyde Somers is in town, but he’s here about the murdered NuTree. Except, he isn’t. And what Bill doesn’t know may kill him.

Ex-GI Bill is being paid more money than he can refuse to investigate the death of his cousin’s lover, the local mayor. The investigation forces Bill outside and into life. Waiting for him are his PTSD and Julie: married to the pastor of the mayor’s church, has a thing for 1980s fashion. The police and coroner give him every reason to quit. If they knew being a pain in the ass is one of the things that’ll make Bill ignore logic, heed his intuition, and keep going until the bitter and bloody end, they’d shut the hell up already. SLAIN IN THE SPIRIT's near future setting looks at what our society and technology may be like for our grand-children; living, loving, and death remain the same.
