This video gives instruction on making a bench plane and a compass plane. A compass plane is a curved bottom plane used in guitar making to scoop out the solera and back work boards. These work boards are dished to a radius because both the top and back of the guitar are domed.The bench plane is the most commonly used plane in any woodworking shop. John Bogdanovich has been making classical guitars for performers and professional musicians for almost 20 years. He has also authored the book Classical Guitar Making: A Modern Approach to a Traditional Design" published by Sterling Publishing and has produced the 10-DVD box set "Making a Concert Classical Guitar with John S. Bogdanovich", both considered must have references on the subject. John has an undergraduate degree in electrical engineering from Pratt Institute, a graduate degree in electrical engineering from Polytechnic University, and has worked as a hardware design engineer at AT&T Bell Laboratories. John also studied woodworking at the Fine Woodworking Program at the college of the Redwoods with James Krenov, becoming the first person to make a musical instrument at the school. In 1996 he established J.S. Bogdanovich Guitars on the North Coast of California, later moving the business to Asheville, NC. He currently makes guitars, teaches classes, and carries a full line of guitar building products in his Swannanoa, NC shop.
