His approach to writing and life are as unique as his name.Mister Mann Frisby has thrived as a creative force in the literary world, while also serving as a leader in the Philadelphia community.Frisby, 30, began his journalism career at the Philadelphia Daily News in 1997, where he was hired immediately after completing a three month internship. It was only the second time in the newspaper's history that an intern was offered a position. The South Philadelphia native made a name for himself by writing features on everyone from A-list celebrities to convicted murderers. He stepped out on faith in 2000 and left his highly coveted reporting job to pursue a career as a novelist. At the time of his resignation, he was one of the most popular entertainment columnists in the city. The Penn State grad self-published his first novel, “Blinking Red Light”, in May of 2002.After selling more than 15,000 copies mostly from the trunk of his car and local bookstores, he was given a two-book deal from Penguin Books. “I really liked the hustle of daily news reporting but I realized that I had an even deeper passion for writing fiction,” said Frisby, who served as the membership coordinator for PABJ at only 19-years-old. “My decision to leave such a wonderful career was not seen by many as wise, but I count it as one of the best decisions I've ever made.” Penguin re-released “Blinking Red Light” under its Riverhead imprint in May of 2004, and followed with his second novel, “Wifebeater”, in March 2005. He is currently finishing up a motivational book for teenagers entitled “Holla Back…But Listen First: A Life Guide for Young Black Men”. (Skye Larieux Publishing, January, 2006) “I feel like I was born to write the motivational book,” he said recently. “Through journalism I have had the fortune to network with some of the most talented and inspirational black men in the nation, and I hope to past on their wisdom to our future generations.” Frisby, a single father to beautiful Skye, 4, has also gained a national reputation for his work in the sports arena. He is the founder and head coach of PhatBack Athletics, an all boys track club and mentor program. In the last few years the organization has boasted a 100% college attendance rate.
