The preface of this second installment in the Bizle Professional Series promises the reader will gain a "firm grasp of what the business [Investment Management] is all about". This is an ambitious undertaking and the authors deliver on their promise. Following the same format as the first of the series, the reader is presented with a complete over view of the Investment Management sector of the financial services industry. The material is well organized and clearly written though there is an apparent assumption that the reader possesses a basic knowledge of business terminology. This is not a significant barrier and the reader not possessing general business knowledge will benefit from having a general introductory business reference close by. This is a well written and very accessible handbook that, once read, is very likely to be kept close at hand for ready reference. The Bizle series has adopted a two section format, at least in their first two offerings. Given the target audience of Information Technology (IT) professionals, the first section covers the core knowledge of the business, in this volume, Investment Management. By the end of chapter three the reader has learned how the Investment Management sector differs from others in the financial management world, the types of funds and financial products that are managed in this space, and who some of the larger companies are that provide this service to investors. By the end of chapter seven, trends in the investment management world, and a high level description of the standard Investment Management business processes have been covered. The remainder of the book, section two, covers the Information Technology side of this business using a case approach to describe some of the major projects and products found in the Investment Management sector. This section speaks directly to the target audience of IT professionals and creates a clear link between their expertise and the success of the Investment Management companies they work for.Investment Management is a very complex business environment and a number of pressures including increased regulation and the emergence of Brazil, Russia, India and China (BRIC) as significant players, point to that complexity increasing. The authors have done an excellent job of painting a realistic picture of the Investment Management business environment. Their attention to the regulatory side and the linking of that to the increased role of Information Technology in meeting regulatory demands are particularly useful for CIOs and other IT professionals striving to understand their role in this business. The final chapter "The Future" underlines the authors' belief in the need for the strategic integration of Information Technology in the overall success of Investment Management businesses. In this fairly short book the authors have set out to provide Information Technology professionals with an understanding of the Investment Management business sector. They have done this well and provided a good reference text. The outline format provides a clear pathway from which to embark on more in depth reading. This book should be required reading for any Information Technology professional considering a career in the Investment Management industry. It should be a component of any new Investment Management Information Technology employee orientation program. But in addition to this intended use, this book would be valuable to non-IT executives in the Investment Management world particularly those who do not understand the competitive and compliance opportunities their Information Technology employees can support.
