Hard Cover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Good. Numerous b/w Photographs, Line Plans Ilustrador. Dust jacket unclipped, small tear, slight wear to edges. Numerous b/w Photographs, Line Plans. 128 pages clean and tight. Preface: - "The Meon Valley Railway will always remain in my mind as one of my favourite photographic haunts. Opened in 1903, as part of a through route from London via Alton to Portsmouth, and laid out to main line standards, it never fulfilled its original purpose, and remained a backwater to the end of its days. Who better to chronicle its story than Ray Stone, a life long resident of West Meon, whose grandfather was parcels agent there for 40 years, who observed its rise and fall at close quarters, and had the sad task of assisting at the demolition. I call to mind two unconventional trips, once in 1948 on the footplate of the engine hauling the up afternoon goods train from West Meon to Alton, an interesting experience and in the mid '70's, the motive power being an old Austin Mini fitted with flanged wheels by Charles Ashby, who at that time had a lease of the remnant of the line from Droxford to Mislingford. As an old Guildford driver once said to me, "what a beautiful line that was that ran through the Meon Valley, such wonderful scenery, that I always thought I was in a world of fantasy". E.C.
