"Endicott achieved the nearly-impossible: permission for a foreigner to study a village in rural China...the result, filled with analysis and unique information about village life over many years, is one of the most interesting currently available books on China..."-Jonathan Mirsky, Times Literary Supplement

Red Earth: Revolution in a Sichuan Village by Stephen Endicott is a 1991 historical study examining four decades of social, economic, and institutional change in rural China. Based on field research and interviews conducted up to 1988, the book explores how national policies under Mao Zedong and the shift toward decollectivization under Deng Xiaoping transformed a single Sichuan village. Core Themes and Focus Oral History: The book bypasses top-down official narratives by centering the direct voices, memories, and lived experiences of local commune members. Social Transformation: It chronicles dramatic shifts in daily life, public health, education, family planning, and the emancipation of women. Economic Evolution: It details the structural transitions from early land reform and the creation of people's communes through the Great Leap Forward to later economic reforms. Philosophical and Political Questions: The Collective Good: It investigates how a rural community defines social welfare and collective benefit versus individual drive. Productivity vs. Socialism: It evaluates whether socialist welfare objectives can realistically sustain a productive workforce under difficult conditions. Pragmatism of Collectivism: It argues that certain collective systems did function effectively under local leadership, rather than failing due to inherent theoretical flaws.
