Although John Gower intended the Latin verses in Confessio Amantis`to serve as an important aid to reading, even as a primary means of entry' they have been largely neglected because of their difficulty. Echard and Fanger'sverse translation- the first complete translation ever -attempts to capture both the meaning and the poetic features of Gower's Latin lines. The preface evaluates Gower's achievement in the larger context of Anglo-Latin literature.
