Written for the student with a background in structural dynamics and an interest in structural mechanics, this book introduces the theory of isolation with a focus on foundational concepts. Much of the analysis may be applied to other types of isolation systems, and the code requirements apply to all systems. This book is the synthesis of over twenty years of lectures at the University of California, Berkeley, which have been refined and simplified over that time for easy comprehension. It is directed at undergraduates as a senior elective and to first-year graduate students. Students planning to do more advanced work will be prepared for further research. Students planning to work on isolation design projects after graduation will benefit from this introductory material and the discussion of the design code.
