Hermann's 1966 book, Lie groups for physicists (W.A. Benjamin) contributed to the particle physicists' evolution from the viewpoint of 19th-century mathematics to that of Lie groups and fiber bundles. In this volume, he further catalyzes the development of new mathematical tools and ideas which can aid in the further development of physics along nonlinear lines, i.e. the problems of multiplication of distributions and the singularity structure of generalized solutions of nonlinear partial differential equations.
