In 1980 Ronald Reagan, Hollywood movie star of the thirties to fifties and former Governor of California, gained an electoral victory of staggering proportions to become the fortieth President of the United States. His opponents in the Democratic Party were stunned. Politicians across the globe were eager to know how this relative outsider had suddenly triumphed by such an overwhelming majority. Surely a master plan required a master architect? Mexican President Portillo's first question to Reagan when they met shortly after the election was: "Mr President, who is Dick Wirthlin?" As Reagan's more visible managers answered journalists' questions about strategy on the campaign trail, Dr Richard Wirthlin and his devoted team of Mormon pollsters and political scientists quietly directed their candidate's every move on his survey company's sophisticated computers.
