He went to France as a very young volunteer and served as a machine gunner until 1917 when he was badly wounded. This is a vivid account of his experiences on the Western Front and is a social document of considerable importance.He is a sympathetic and sensitive observer and his description of the battlefield after the first day of the Somme has real emotional intensity.
