Cuenta las insólitas aventuras en que se ven involucrado un portero de un lujoso edificio de Manhattan. El autor crea un mundo encantado pleno de realidades sórdidas y de un soberbio delirio barroco. Se nos muestra que los animales tienen también los justos elementos de la melancolía y pueden llegar a ser más humanos que el hombre.
