His work is the oldest and best-preserved representation of popular Hellenistic philosophy, particularly the Cynic diatribe literary genre, which can be seen as a forerunner to the Christian sermon. The fragments preserved in John Stobaeus's anthology show Teles addressing a general audience, especially young men, to teach moral lessons. His philosophy focused on bringing human nature in line with Socratic and Cynic principles, aiming for authenticity and self-sufficiency.
