Timber engineering is moving into the 21st Century faced with challenges in technology, governmental mandates and environmental concerns. Engineers are continuously being challenged in building the structures of the future. This proceedings contains papers presented at the session, 21st Century Timber Engineering, held at the 1993 ASCE Annual Convention and Exposition, Dallas, Texas, October 24-28, 1993. It discusses four issues relevant to the use of wood in construction: using multistory wood-framed construction to produce affordable housing; maintaining structural integrity while being exposed to fire; developing a load and resistance factor design specification for engineers; and utilizing wood in order to protect the environment.
