Reseña del editor

The reading-focused reform environment of the new millennium is fertile ground for strengthening the link between research and public policy. This work aims to help to find a proactive voice in "setting the research agenda" for advancing standards and practices of excellence in teaching. The author has compiled chapters by presenters at IRA's Reading Research 2000 Conference into a case for increased investment in teacher preparation for reading instruction. Topics include: the status of knowledge base; current practices in undergraduate reading teacher education; learning to teach writing in teacher education and beyond; beginning teachers' instructional practices; social reconstruction and literacy teacher education; the relationship of teacher education, diversity, and literacy; the CIERA School Change Project; and teachers' discussions about standards documents. The text also provides summaries of three major reports regarding literacy education issued by national organizations.
