Finding just the right quotation for the occasion can be very much easier if the richly varied writings of different countries are considered. This unique dictionary contains an extensive collection of carefully-chosen quotations from many languages, both from the past and present. The compilers’ aim has been to give as wide a variety of quotations under each headword as possible; the languages range from Czech, to Arabic, to Japanese, to Latin, the sources from traditional religious writings and classical authors to contemporary literary and political figures. Each entry gives the quotation in its original language, the source from which it has been taken, a translation, and cross-references to other relevant quotations. The index of authors provides a quick guide to the works which have been quoted; the quotations are grouped under subject heading, again for easy access. Most of these subject headings include quotations from several languages; there is, therefore, immediately a selection of thoughts and attitudes which vary considerably in scope, as considerably as the nationalities and cultures from which they spring. Some of the quotations are humorous; many are entertaining; all are illuminating. This is a book to dip into and enjoy as well as to use for reference.
