About the book >.>.> Lee Krasner: A Retrospective by Barbara Rose examines the complex legacy of Lee Krasner, a pivotal yet often overlooked figure in the first generation of New York School artists. The book navigates the challenges of assessing Krasner's significance, highlighting her unique character?a blend of self-effacement towards her own work and an assertive personality that alienated many contemporaries. Despite her groundbreaking contributions as a fully-fledged abstract artist influenced by Matisse and Mondrian, her absence from the iconic 1951 photograph of the ?Irascibles,? a defining moment for the New York School, has contributed to her historical marginal sation.Krasner's participation in key exhibitions and her relationships with celebrated artists such as Jackson Pollock, Ad Reinhardt, and other figures of the Abstract Expressionist movement underscore her vital role in modern art. However, her refusal to conform to the social dynamics of the artists' community?particularly her avoidance of the Cedar Bar and the Artists Club?further complicated her standing. The book documents how her critical stance on the art world and her forthrightness often positioned her in opposition to influential critics, exacerbating her isolation from the male-dominated circles of her time.Rose captures the essence of Krasner?s character, revealing an artist who, despite personal sacrifices and societal barriers, remained true to her artistic vision. She engaged in activism, notably protesting against the underrepresentation of women artists in major institutions. Ultimately, Lee Krasner: A Retrospective offers a nuanced exploration of not only Krasner's artistry but also her contentious relationships and the socio-political landscape of her era, solidifying her place in the narrative of modern art.
