Lewis is Professor of Computer Science at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He received a BS in Electrical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1952 and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1954 and 1956. He was an Assistant Professor in the Electrical Engineering Department at MIT from 1956 to 1959. From 1959 to 1987 he was a research scientist and later Manager of Computer Science at the General Electric Research and Development Center in Schenectady, N.Y. He joined the faculty at Stony Brook in 1987.
