Constructive Reading explores some of the important developments in the area of teaching literary reading. The book is a collection of essays from some of the most respected teachers of response to literature in the field: John Willinsky, Trevor Gambell, Michael Smith, Brian White, David Miall, Robert Graham, Lorri Neilsen, Russell Hunt, Jack Thompson, Deborah Appleman, Mary Beth Hines, Judith Millen, and Ursula Kelly. Each of these teacher-researchers investigates the role of the social construction of knowledge as it can be realized in the literature classroom, and explores ways teachers can encourage students to construct meaning in response to literature.
Constructive Reading is the logical successor to the editors' Beyond Communication: Reading Comprehension and Criticism (Boynton/Cook, 1990). In that book, the authors and editors examined not only the communicative functions of reading but also the generative and learning functions of literary reading. Constructive Reading expands the discussion by attempting to define how teachers can help students read beyond the communicative purposes which have dominated the field in the past, to reach more mature and sophisticated reading through constructive methods. Highly accessible and readable, the book makes the complex theories of reading meaningful for teaching.
