A law-abiding citizen is arrested for an unspecified crime and kept under house-arrest. The town buzzes with wild rumours...and the innocent victim soon discovers what dark suspicions his neighbours have been harbouring. And in the distant capital there are ominous rumbles of discontent...The secret policeman fears being transferred to a more dangerous posting, so he bullies his innocent 'suspect' into writing secret reports. At first the 'suspect' recycles trivial local gossip. Then he becomes more ambitious and invents totally fictitious reports depicting his fellow citizens as selfless heroes But after the revolution, everyone begins behaving exactly as he had invented...This is the darkly comic tale of how momentous changes dramatically alter the respectable townsfolk of G-, how the past is remembered...or collectively forgotten. My Shadow depicts a society in transition and, with irony and wit, shows how it deals with truth, history and identity.
