This special issue of "Visual Cognition" features empirical and theoretical contributions by leading research scholars in the field. Following a general introduction by C. Bundesen and H. Shibuya and an authoritative review by C.W. Eriksen of work on spatial attention in the flankers task, empirical articles by B. Hommel, L.T. McCalley, and C. Umilta et al. report important new findings on visual selection by spatial location. A second group of articles by D. Luna et al., M. Donk, J. Theeuwes, and Y.-P. Chen & A. Allport report on recent empirical findings on visual selection by other criteria than spatial location. The last group of four articles consists of weighty theoretical statements by A.H.C. van der Heijden, A. Treisman, Y. Tsal et al., and W.X. Schneider. As a whole, the issue forms a major contribution to the literature on visual selective attention.
