THE HISTORY OF THE LIFE AND REIGNE OF RICHARD THE THIRD: GEORGE BUCK First published London 1646. This edition reproduced from the 1647 edition. With a new introduction by A.R. Myers, M.A., Ph.D., F.S.A. The story of the ounces in the tower is one with which all school children are familiar and it is surrounded by a wealth of published material. It has become difficult however, for many to distinguish between fact and fantasy, and the arguments still rage as to who was directly responsible for the tragedy. The author of the present volume was the first seriously to argue that Richard III was not the hunchbacked villain Shakespeare had made him out to be, and this at a time, during the Civil War, when reaction had begun to set in against the Tudor mon archy. The book consists of a convincing and amusing narrative which tells the story of how Richard carne to be crowned, the Earl of Richmond's invasion of England, his defeat of Richa~d at Bosworth and how it came to be assumed that Richard had smothered the princes. There are also lively details of episodes such as Richard's coronation and this reprint, once again, makes generally available a work which will be of interest to the student of heraldry and genealogy as well as the historian and general reader.
