This volume contains the papers presented at the October 1993 "Science Summit" of scientific academies on world population, held in Delhi, India. The Summit was attended by representatives of national academies of science throughout the world. Sixty academies signed a Statement reflecting their continuing concern about the intertwined problems of rapid population growth, resource consumption, environmental degradation and poverty. The Statement set the target of achieving zero population growth within the lifetime of our children. In a comprehensive survey, the academies of the world call upon governments and international decision-makers to take incisive action and adopt an integrated policy on population and sustainable development on a global scale. This book forms the scientific input to 1994 United Nations International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) taking place in Cairo, Egypt in September 1994. It should be of importance to demographers, environmentalists, population economists, policy-makers and all those concerned with the wellbeing of this planet.
