Reflection requires the capacity to relate ideas. It goes beyond memory and analysis to analogies and conclusions which are illuminating and intriguing. A most useful word in considering right reflection is pondering. Pondering is a mental process which can be developed and for which there is a technique. It can, therefore, become an aid to increasing understanding and a road to wisdom. Most definitely, it is not day-dreaming nor is it a strenuous meditation exercise requiring sustained effort. A really new thought is a precious possession, a delight to savour, an expansion of consciousness and an enrichment of life. It is a joy well worth striving for. To change one's viewpoint does not belittle a man's intelligence. Indeed, to be afraid to change is unintelligent in this changing world which is the greatest day of opportunity humanity has ever had. We need far-sighted, daring thought pioneers and a new and deeper understanding of what is really good for us as human beings.
Foster Bailey (1888-1977). Born in Massachusetts during the famous blizzard of 1888, he was all his life a rebel, unconventional, a non-conformist and a true disciple in the purest human and hierarchical way. In her "Unfinished Autobiography", Alice Bailey writes at some length of the part Foster played in her life and work and of her abiding gratitude and appreciation. They met in 1919 and worked together for 30 years. At her death, Foster had to assume the major responsibility for making sure that the Alice Bailey books were kept in circulation and that the service activities generated through Lucis Trust continued. Foster's overriding wish during his life was "to be useful" and this he fulfilled right to the time of his death.
