It is the rare genius of Wilcox that he can both seize and visualise the drama as brill-iantly as if he himself had been present and witnessed with his own eyes the events that he depicts so accurately, while at the same time painting the ships in all their glory as they truly were; ships that seamen could sail and handle, real ships, not just stage prop-erties, however beautiful.
