It revisits Henry-Russell Hitchcock?s earlier assessment of Roche and John Dinkeloo, which situated their work alongside major figures and developments in modern architecture, and argues that this perspective did not fully address the particular character and strategies of Roche?s practice. The book considers how later work offers grounds to test and reassess Hitchcock?s analysis. It traces Roche?s formation in the United States, including his studies at the Illinois Institute of Technology and his subsequent work with Saarinen in Bloomfield Hills. That experience shaped his early projects with Dinkeloo, including the Oakland Museum, Richard C. Lee High School and Cummins factory in England. The discussion relates these buildings to Saarinen?s varied experiments with architectural form and expression, and identifies the Ford Foundation building as an inventive, elegant work that begins a sequence of projects by Roche and Dinkeloo.
