ALL UK PARCELS SENT TRACKED! ALL OVERSEAS PARCELS SENT AIRMAIL, TRACKED! (S/hand, Hardcover, 1987). (1979) 1987 reprint. 8vo (138 x 223mm). Pp128. B/w illustrations by Martin Knowelden. Green boards, spine titled in silver. Slight spotting to edges but very good in frayed and soiled dust-wrapper. Account of Plummer's development as a hunter, from boyhood exploits with lurcher and terrier to adulthood, with many interesting digressions. Includes chapters on cock-fighting and bird-catching, cooking and eating badgers, foxes and rats, hawks and hawking. Although Plummer often comes across as bonkers, many of his apparently eccentric actions, such as badger eating or covering himself with a concoction of badger grease and herbs, were experiments to establish the plausibility of claims made by other writers. Being perpetually surrounded by people incapable of sharing this pioneering spirit of enquiry seems the source of his restlessness and the driving force behind the hundreds of books he wrote in his lifetime. This is not to say that Plummer did not have deep problems, as he himself describes in Hancock's My Life with Lurchers. . Nº de ref. del artículo: 597

In this book the author recounts his exploits as a hunter, from boyhood days as a truant in a Welsh mining valley, ratting and pursuing such game as could be found with a lurcher he also explores such vanished pastimes of the working man such as cockfighting, birdcatching and investigates the edibiity of some rather unlikely game. But the main characters of the book are San his terrier and two hawks Pelaw a buzzard and Kate, a goshawk. David Brian Plummer?was a British writer, teacher, dog breeder, and something of a countryside maverick. Born in Bridgend, Wales, in 1936, he led a colourful and unconventional life that included stints as a gamekeeper in Europe, a professional boxer in America, and a teacher in the UK. He's best known for his books on working dogs, hunting, and rural life, often blending gritty realism with eccentric humour. His most popular works include Tales of a Rat-Hunting Man, Rogues and Running Dogs, and The Complete Jack Russell Terrier. He also developed the Plummer Terrier, a breed named after him. Plummer's writing is steeped in the traditions of British field sports and self-sufficiency, often reflecting his deep connection to the countryside and its characters his books remain cult favourites among enthusiasts of rural lore and working dogs. "Plummer recounts his exploits as a hunter from boyhood days . . . not a book for the faint hearted" (from the cover description). Brian Plummer (11 September 1936 12 September 2003), was a British writer, teacher and dog breeder. Growing up in the austere years around World War II, Plummer based some of his biographical stories in and around the valley in which he grew up. Some of the stories involve friends, members of the village community, and bizarre members of his own family. RightWayUp Books aims to provide accurate and detailed descriptions.
