This book provides the theory and some examples of rule based reasoning applied to computer design. The presentation begins with design methods. These include both structured, object oriented design applied to software and systems engineering using several examples. Rule based reasoning, fuzzy logic, and new methods of virtual prototyping of computer designs are also covered. Virtual prototyping, in contrast to hardware prototyping, offers the promise of much lower design cost and more time to prepare prototypes. A discussion on this topic concludes with a sample implementation of these methods that can be used for computer system design.

The purpose of this text is to provide a vision of such a system synthesis capability. This capability rests on three separate technologies. One basis of this vision is common design and analysis methods for hardware and software. A strong candidate for a common method is the object oriented approach. This technique emerged from the software arena as an answer to user needs for increased reliability in increasingly complex designs. Another basis of the vision is artificial intelligence (AI) technology. Despite some rough starts, AI is now mature enough to constitute a high powered, low risk alternative to classical, algorithmic logic. Fuzzy logic can extend the capabilities of AI expert systems beyond the limits of binary logic. The third element is the decreasing cost and increasing performance of computer work stations. These computers offer the speed, high-resolution graphics, and storage capacity to solve difficult engineering tasks at an affordable price.
