Romare Bearden (1912-1988) reinterpreted the French tradition of collage by combining it with American Jazz Age music and heroic literature to "declare the life and vibrancy of African-American culture...in the post-technological world." Written by Lowery Stokes Sims, Associate Curator of the Twentieth Century Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, this edition of the Rizzoli Art Series celebrates Bearden's elevation of traditional African-American themes to the inspiring levels of the great masters.
