Callista Roy, PhD, RN, FAAN, Professor, William F. Connell School of Nursing, Boston College, USA has been involved in nursing education for 46 years. Her numerous faculty appointments include positions at Mount St. Mary's College where she also served as Department Chair (1971-1982), at the University of Portland, Oregon where she helped to initiate a master's programme, and at the University of San Francisco. At the Connell School of Nursing, Dr. Roy was part of the team that initiated a PhD program in nursing that graduated 161 PhD alums in the first 21 years. Other visiting faculty appointments include La Sabana University, Columbia; University Autonoma de Nuevo Leon, Mexico; St. Mary's College, Kurume, Japan; University of Lund, Sweden; and University of Conception, Chile. Dr. Roy served on the Board of the International Network for Doctoral Education from 2003-2006. She is Faculty Senior Nurse Scientist at the Yvonne L. Munn Center for Nursing Research at Massachusetts General Hospital and was a Charter Member of the Nursing Research Study Section, DRG, and NIH. Dr. Roy is best known for developing the Roy Adaptation Model of Nursing and leadership for knowledge-based practice. She has lectured in 36 countries on 5 continents. As early as 1987, an estimated 10,000 nurses had studied in schools where the curricula used the Roy Adaptation Model and the impact of the model on practice continues as health care agencies use it in designing strategies for Magnet Status. Dr. Roy has 136 publications, eleven of which are books, and including Springer's Nursing Knowledge Development and Clinical Practice, with translations in 12 languages. Her published analysis of 163 studies based on the Roy Model provided a blueprint for theory-based scholarship in nursing.
