This collection of letters, written by English poet Helen Maria Williams (1761-1827), chronicles the degeneration of the French Revolution between 1790 and 1796, and her interactions with central personalities involved in the Revolution. Her eyewitness accounts trace the French people's attempt to leap from the early modern world to modernity with its failed promise of greater liberty and justice. The introduction includes information about her life and writing, women writers in the 1790s, and the Revolution itself. No index. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.
