Much of the dread that a diagnosis of cancer elicits can be attributed directly to a lack of information about the disease, and to impenetrable and off-putting medical jargon. This A-Z reference, co-authored by a former cancer patient and the associate chief oncologist at St Vincent's Hospital in New York, provides clear and concise information that cancer patients and their families need, clearing up some of the confusion that surrounds the disease, outlining treatment options and giving the patient a greater sense of control in his or her treatment. A subject index aids the reader in finding a definition when a particular term is unknown, and annotated appendices listing more than 100 cancer organizations, support groups and medical centres provide further sources of assistance. A separate appendix lists drugs used in the treatment of cancer and AIDS, antiemetics and pain medication, with generic, brand and chemical name given for each.
