Although famous during her lifetime, Kate Field subsequently slipped into such a state of obscurity that in 1964, the ""St Louis American"" published an article in her honour entitled ""Who Was Kate Field?"" This collection of her correspondence allows Field to answer the question herself.

Carolyn J. Moss is an assistant professor emerita of English at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. Her books include The Bibliographical Guide to Self-Disclosure Literature and (with Sidney P. Moss) Charles Dickens and His Chicago Relatives and The Charles Dickens-Thomas Powell Vendetta.
