Sinopsis
Schwarcz (history and anthropology, U. of Sao Paulo) explores how racial theories seemed to offer a legitimate way to explain both local problems and the difficulty of creating a new nation in the recent aftermath of the abolition of slavery and independence from Portugal. She shows how Brazil's intellectual elite borrowed models from Europe and advanced them in an attempt to protect the country's rigid social hierarchy.
