Set was issued in commemoration of the original 1943 publication of "Johnny Reb" by Bobbs Merrill who also first published "Billy Yank" in 1952; as the two books obviously compliment one another several sets have been issued over the years. A leading scholar regarding the social history of the Civil War whose work remains much admired today, Bell Irvin Wiley (1906-1980) earned a Ph.D. from Yale University and served as professor of history at the University of Mississippi (1938-1943), Louisiana State University (1946-1959), and Emory University (1960-1974).
