Java is now the fastest-growing programming language and is expected to overtake C++ and Visual Basic as the most popular language within the next year. There are currently more than 2 million Java programmers. It is especially popular abroad; more than 60 per cent of international programmers are using Java. The new version of the JDK (Java Development Kit) is expected to be called 1.4 and adds many new features to the Java core libraries. The overall Java platform will still be called version 2. This book focuses on Java 2 Standard Edition, which contains the core language elements, and does not cover the Enterprise or Micro Edition.
