A book about love that isn't going to tell you there's something wrong with you, your clothes, or the pressures of your job and/or family because your love life is something less than you would want. This book isn't interested in blaming women--or men, for that matter--for failures in love. Bonnie Kreps, who has been in and out of love as many times as the rest of us, but who has emerged with her wit intact and her wisdom burnished, brings us good news from the frontlines: It's not us who fail in love, it's love that's failing us. From the time when, as toddlers, we first hear "Cinderella" or "Snow White" we are told that love is romance and romance is everything, and, moreover, it will last forever. Only, in fairy tales and romance novels and Hollywood movies, we never see the "forever," all we hear is that the hero and heroine "live happily ever after." We are being set up, argues the author, by a big lie: the myth of romantic love. Using the metaphors of dragons and castles, princes and princesses, Bonnie Kreps exposes all the destructive notions of romance that mould our expectations and, too often, leave us heartbroken--again. She writes of the Reverse Sleeping Beauty syndrome, where one kiss from Prince Charming, far from making a woman wake up to the reality of her new man, instead blinds her. She writes of the pain women and men both suffer on discovering their heroes and heroines are ordinary people, after all. Provocative and fun to read, yet also wise and very serious, Subversive Thoughts, Authentic Passions reveals the alternatives to romance for women and men who are too grown-up for fairy tales. Born and raised in Denmark, Bonnie Kreps moved to Canada in 1967 and immediately became involved with the burgeoning women's movement. Her commitment to a form of feminism that is relevant to both women and men led to her becoming a favourite features' writer at Homemaker's for twelve years. During this time, Bonnie Kreps was a producer and director at CTV and made a variety of films both independently and with the National Film Board, including the 1978 production This Film is About Rape, which won a Red Ribbon at the American Film Festival that year. She currently writes for a number of North American journals and magazines and, in 1989, was nominated for the prestigious Lowell Thomas Award for an article in National Geographic Traveler. Bonnie Kreps currently divides her time between Vancouver and Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and is at work on her second book. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Nº de ref. del artículo: 004364
