The prolific Canadian writer recounts his four-month voyage on one of the last tramp freighters, a converted Russian ice-breaker, from Europe through the Panama Canal, across the South Pacific, then back by way of Singapore, Indonesia, the Indian Ocean, and Suez. He writes both of the places they visited and of life on board with its cast of characters. The Canadian copyright is 1998. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com).
