JOHN MATSON is a writer and researcher with a long-standing interest in the history of Britain's royal estates. A pilot in the Royal Navy for many years, followed by a career in education, his previous books include Dear Osborne: Queen Victoria's Family Life in the Isle of Wight. He lives in Surrey, but makes frequent visits to East Anglia.
