Written by one of the world's leading researchers and his colleagues, this unique book is devoted to the relativistic theory of atomic spectra, based on the adiabatic S-matrix formalism of Gell-Mann and Low. QED theory, applications of S-matrix QED calculations to energy levels, transition probabilities, parity nonconservation in spectra, and theoretical background of adiabatic formalism are discussed.

This monograph is devoted to the relativistic theory of atomic spectra, based on the adiabatic S-matrix formalism of Gell-Mann and Low. Emphasis is placed on one of the popular methods in quantum electrodynamics of atoms and its applications, given for one-and two-electron multicharged ions. These ions are the most suitable objects for the application of the S-matrix adiabatic theory. The book is aimed both at theoreticians working in the area of the relativistic theory of many-electron systems and to graduate students studying atomic theory. It may also be of use to researchers working with the optical properties of atoms and heavy ions.
