9780749252670: Failure Modes and Structural Modelling

Sinopsis

This book looks first at the effect that stress has if the strength of a component is exceeded: in effect, how materials fail depending on the stress that exists within them and how this in turn is related to the applied loading. The second section looks at applying the concepts of stress strain in practice to model the behaviour of structures under load. There are three examples used: modelling structural composite materials; analysing the stresses in pressure vessels, a problem that has wide applicability in industries as diverse as food packaging and gas transport; and finally how the finite element model works, a method that is now ubiquitous in engineering design.
