From ancient times to the present day, each age of human history has produced its great military commanders - men whose tactical abilities and strength of personality have helped to win the victories that have shaped the destinies of nations and the course of world history. "Command" tells the story of these men: their lives, their battles and how they won their fame. Subdivided chronologically, starting with a section on the leaders of the classical world and continuing through the ages up to the present day, this book combines detailed discussion of the structure of the armies and navies of each period, important developments in weaponry and prevailing military philosophies with an A-Z biographical listing of all the great commanders, from Alexander the Great to Nelson and Moshe Dyan. The author has written several books on warfare, has served with the British army and worked at the Imperial War Museum.
