From the late 19th century until the mid-20th century, Chester was a bustling hub of industry, historic sites, tourist attractions, and entertainment. The first city established in Pennsylvania, Chester was famous for its many mills. The area was also home to a major shipbuilding center, the Sun Ship Corporation, as well as other industries, including the Chester Brewery and Blue Naphtha brand soap. The postcards in Chester showcase historic scenes of the city and highlight the long history of this dynamic community.

Delaware County Council honored 10 recipients of the county's 2009 Historic Preservation Awards for their work to maintain the area's unique atmosphere yesterday.
Three of the awards went to those who performed site preservation projects considered exemplary by the county's Heritage Commission. BPG Development Co. received an award for refurbishing the Ellis Preserve property and Square Tavern in Newtown Township. Friends of the Haverford Grange won an honor for their restoration of the Historic Grange Mountain Exterior in Haverford. And Ronald Dell got an award for restoring the Quaker Yarnall home in Edgmont.
Two awardees received recognition for historical publications. They were Lynmar Brock Jr., an author of the Quaker historical novel Must Thee Fight, and the Chester historical Preservation Committee, which composed Postcard History Series: Chester.
Others got awards for special programs/projects. Friends of Willows Cottage got recognition for their reuse of the Willows Cottage site for agricultural purposes, Widener University received an award for a Chester historical exhibit and Arlington Cemetery in Drexel Hill won an award for the Museum of Mourning art in Upper Darby.
Robert E. Seeley's historical research won him an Individual Achievement award. James Duffy won the Leedom B. Morrison Award for his work to rehabilitate the Chester Armory into a school building. The award is named after the late member of the Heritage Commission.
Councilman Tom McGarrigle, R, lauded the awardees for helping to preserve "the irreplaceable features that give each community its distinct character."
