Presenting a panoramic view, this volume emphasizes procedural variety, materials from multiple institutions, real-world perspective, street-level federalism, political context, and the impact of procedures. The aim is to increase student awareness of the full range of policy alternatives by showing how state and local systems have dealt with various issues. Not all states are surveyed; rather, the materials highlight the majority and minority views on each topic, as well as the federal view. U.S. Supreme Court precedents are addressed, and the state cases take positions ranging from total agreement to complete rejection. Material is arranged in sections on gathering information e.g. searches and stops, arrests, interrogations; evaluating charges; resolving guilt and innocence; and measuring punishment and reassessing guilt.
