Land management is a profession but it is also an art, and needs to be practised as such. The theme of this book is that the art of managing the landed estate - a unique and precious asset - demands the setting of clear objectives and the monitoring of progress. For the institutional owner the objectives may be framed in a firm long-term context: for the private individual, unsure of maintaining family ownership, the over-riding aim may be to structure and manage the estate so that it is passed on as a viable entity to future generations.

This book considers land ownership and occupation and their role in maintaining the countryside and the businesses carried on there.
