When James, King of Scotland, succeeded to the throne of England in 1603, many Romanists cheered, hoping the new monarch, whose mother had shared their beliefs, might grant them the freedom of worship they had fought for so long.

But kingmaker Cecil had a long-standing hatred of Romanists, and when the masses cried for the head of King James, Cecil knew he must quickly find a scapegoat.

This story tells of the corruption and double-dealing behind the Gunpowder Plot, of a man whom Robert Cecil could not bribe and of the most famous scapegoat of all time, Guy Fawkes.
