This book is an outline of the means by which physics has provided us with a picture of the interior of the earth and of the development of its surface features. Geophysics has progressed so rapidly that it is presumptuous for one person to attempt to cover the entire field - even that part relating to the solid earth. Indeed, almost every chapter in what follows has been the subject of recent collections of papers. Nevertheless, anyone who has attempted to present the material to students will realize the need for a unified treatment. Even this does not lead to complete uniformity, for the individual subjects are often more conveniently treated with different notations and conventions. But at least a single author can draw attention to the similarities and differences between sections. In a subject that is of interest to persons with varied backgrounds, it is necessary to draw compromises between the mathematical and the descriptive, and between the global view and the detailed study of local features. With the apparent success of the new global dynamics there is a great temptation to emphasize the description of surface features in terms of it. But if geophysics is to continue to progress, the geophysicist of the future must have a rather deeper grasp of the subject. This book is designed for the student who has completed two years or so of physics and mathematics, and who is now interested in turning to the study of the earth. A knowledge of vector analysis, for example, is presumed, whereas the geological terms employed are relatively few, and most of these are defined in the first chapter. Properties of global significance are emphasized, rather than the description of individual surface features. Nº de ref. del artículo: 14171
